First gas recovered from subsea compression of Ormen Lange field

June 27, 2025

Shell has started subsea compression to boost production from the Ormen Lange gas field in the Norwegian Sea. Two subsea compression stations are installed with the objective of increasing the amount of gas recovered from the field from 75% to 85%.

The Ormen Lange Unit is operated by Shell (17.8%), with partners Petoro (36.5%), Equinor (25.3%), Orlen Upstream Norway (14%) and Vår Energi (6.3%).

The new compression stations are located 120 km offshore and are connected directly to the Nyhamna processing facility, with no new platform needing to be installed.

According to the Plan for Development (PDO), subsea compression is expected to recover an additional 30-50 billion cubic meters (BCM) of gas from the Ormen Lange gas field.

The gas from Ormen Lange is exported to European markets.

Shell and the Ormen Lange partners will mark the project start-up with a celebration event later this summer.

Notes to editors

  • Ormen Lange was discovered in 1997 and began production in 2007.
  • Ormen Lange is a gas field located in the Norwegian Sea, at 900-1 000 meters of water depth, 120 km from the onshore processing and export facility at Nyhamna. The gas is exported to the European market through Langeled and the Norwegian gas export system.
  • The estimated incremental production mentioned above are 100% total gross figures
  • Main project contractors are SLB OneSubsea for the offshore scope and Aker Solutions for the onshore scope
